What Is Neighborhood Watch?
Neighborhood Watch is simply a program of neighbors watching other neighbors' property. It is thousands of eyes and ears whose owners have organized together in groups to report suspicious activities or crimes to the Sheriff.
Citizen participation is one of the most effective tools against crime because the job of stopping burglary, robbery or sexual assault is impossible for the Sheriff to accomplish alone. Crime watchers are networks of neighbors trained by Crime Prevention deputies in home and self-protection, suspect identification and how to serve effectively as additional eyes and ears for law enforcement agencies in their communities.
Neighborhood Watch groups provide a way for neighbors to help one another by keeping an eye on each other's homes and property. A telephone chain is set up to enable neighbors to keep one another informed of any criminal activity and to receive information from the Sheriff concerning descriptions of suspected criminals and other pertinent information.
When a member of a network sees a suspicious person or vehicle, he or she should call the Sheriff's Office immediately.
Neighborhood Watch is a simple program of neighborhood protection against the common enemy--CRIME!

Role Of The Sheriff's Office:
In an effort to reduce crime and improve the quality of lives for all citizens of Hillsborough County, the Sheriff’s Office has a interest in developing groups of apartment owners, managers and resident who would serve in a Neighborhood Watch capacity. This has been a growing trend among apartment complexes within the University Area, and the efforts are paying off. The Deputy assigned to the District I Neighborhood Watch Program is Deputy Chris DePolis and he is currently assigned to the Community Outreach Program.
If your apartment complex would be willing to consider such a program, Deputy DePolis would be glad to hear from your or your group.
The University Area Neighborhood Watch Contact - Deputy Chris DePolis
Deputy DePolis has worked as a law enforcement deputy with the HCSO, since August 2002. Even though he grew up and has lived on the west side of Hillsborough County for the majority of my life, he has spent most of my HCSO career working in the south and southeastern parts of Hillsborough county, in District IV. He began working patrol midnights in the communities of Progress Village, Brandon, Valrico, Turkey Creek and Lithia. For a short time, he was also a part-time CRD for the Providence/Heather Lakes area of Brandon.
After working midnights for a couple of years, He became a Fieild Training Officer (FTO), training new recruits while patrolling the areas of Gibsonton and Riverview. In 2005, He transferred to the District IV Property Crimes Section, where I worked as a burglary detective. His duties then included investigating business, residential, and vehicle burglaries, along with a healthy dose of grand thefts. His areas of responsibility were primarily the areas of Clair-Mel and Progress Village.
In 2008, I transferred to the Crime Prevention Bureau (now known as the Community Outreach Division). In addition to the other duties of working in the Community Outreach Division, his primary responsibilities are to assist the public with organizing, establishing, and maintaining Neighborhood Watch programs in communities located within the District I Patrol area.
